No sound when a VGA/HDMI cord is plugged in

I took my Toshiba Satellite laptop for a repair two weeks ago. The hard drive had many bad sectors and had to be replaced. OS is Windows 8 (I think??). I have two issues.

I am a teacher. I use a VGA to HDMI to put a PowerPoint presentation on the screen, as my computer does not have VGA port. Before the hard drive fix, sound worked fine. But when I plug in the HDMI/VGA, no sound comes out of my computer at all. Any idea how to fix this?

A small issue. For brightness and volume buttons, I now have to hit "FN+volume" to get it to work. It wasn't like this before. Just convenience hah, but can I reprogram the keys to do it without the "FN+"?

I would appreciate any help. I hope this is the right place to post. My Google searches aren't helping me, as sound with the VGA and HDMI is always talking about computer to TV. I want sound to come from my laptop when I plug it in.

Please help...

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
