Former Bears quarterback Matt Blanchard was in Kansas City on Tuesday preparing to have a workout and potentially sign with the Chiefs.
Blachard, a Lake Zurich native who starred at Wisconsin Whitewater, received an injury settlement from the Bears after suffering a broken left (non throwing) hand in the third preseason game.
Blanchard underwent surgery and was given full medical clearance Monday, a source familiar with the situation told the Tribune.
The Bears were believed to have interest in bringing Blanchard back but because he was given an injury settlement, which spanned the first five weeks of the regular season, NFL rules prevent him from re signing with them until after Week 10. Coach Marc Trestman was complimentary of Blanchard during their time together.
The Chiefs have some people in the building already familiar with Blanchard. Their director of player personnel Chris Ballard came from the Bears. Chiefs special teams coaches Dave Toub and Kevin O also could provide head coach Andy Reid with a scouting report.
Blanchard spent most of last season on the practice squad for the Bears and was signed to a futures contract after fielding offers from other clubs. If things go well in Kansas City, he likely join the Chiefs 53 man roster or their practice squad. If not, other clubs are believed to have interest, so a return to the Bears after Week 10 might not be feasible. The Chiefs have three quarterbacks on their roster right now with Chase Daniel and Tyler Authentic John Brown Jersey Bray behind starter Alex Smith, so a spot on the 53 might be a long shot at this point in Kansas City.
The Bears have only two quarterbacks in the building starter Jay Cutler and backup Josh McCown. Jarrod Johnson has rotated on and off the practice squad.
The Bears confirmed Tuesday they have signed defensive tackle Christian Tupou. They made room by terminating the practice squad contract of defensive end Aston Whiteside.
