How College Coaches' Salaries Stack

SIOUX FALLS, SD With the NFL Draft this weekend, many athletes are moving from college football up to the pro and with that move comes big money. But what do the coaches who helped them get to this point receive? How do local coaches stack up against schools in our region?

When you look at the salaries Authentic Ross Cockrell Jersey of NFL players and coaching staff, and even some Division One schools, the salaries at SDSU and USD don even come close.

"When we look at our competition, I not really worried about what Ohio State paying somebody. I more worried about what a school like us. Someone we compete against," SDSU Athletic Director Justin Sell officialauthenticbills.com/authentic-preston-brown-jersey.html said.

Ohio State for example paid its head football coach, Urban Meyer, over $4 million last year. Ross Cockrell Youth Jersey Both SDSU and USD officials say they not in the game of competing with schools this size.

But that doesn mean salaries aren important.

"Let be frank about it. Most people think or determine their sense of self worth by your paycheck. And what are you getting paid in comparison to your peers. So our coaches, they Preston Brown Kids Jersey know what everybody else is getting paid," USD Athletic Director David Herbster said.

Peers like North Dakota State and Western Illinois are constant competition in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

The football coach at NDSU is making $261,000. Though NDSU enrollment is slightly larger, the head football coaches at USD and SDSU are making much less.

USD Coach Joe Glenn brings in $131,000 a year, and SDSU John Stiegelmeier gets $161,000.

Western Illinois coach, on the other hand, is more closely compensated at about $206,000.

These are all things the AD are aware of when deciding their own coaches pay.

"We got a lot of data with really peer institutions. Certainly the Summitt League, but other leagues like the Missouri Valley Conference, the Horizon League. Other schools that are very similar to us in terms of size and scope and budgets," Sell said.

"Hopefully we at that point where we not so far behind in salaries that in order to be and maintain competitiveness, it not a big stretch for us to try and find somebody," Herbster said.
