Academics and rankings

The University of Nebraska College of Medicine is nationally recognized for excellence in professional medical education. In the national rankings, the College of Medicine is currently (2011) ranked 6th in the nation.[1]

Other programs that also received a national ranking include: The Physician Assistant program tied for 16th; the College of Nursing's master's degree program ranked 36th; the College of Pharmacy ranked 29th; the physical therapy program ranked 33rd.

UNMC's commitment to research has resulted in the addition of the twin stateoftheart Durham Research Towers (pictured above). Currently extramural support is above the $100 million mark and the goal of the university is to hopefully reach $200 million in funding by the year 2012.

UNMC opened the $52.7 million Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education in 2008 thrusting the college of medicine to the forefront of medical education in the United States. Construction of the Sorrell Center was funded completely through private donations.

In January 2007, UNMC added a College of Public Health to its academic enterprise. This College addresses a variety of issues facing Nebraska, including health promotion and disease prevention, environmental health and safety, health care delivery, and biosecurity and biopreparedness. Also slated for completion over the next few years are: 1) The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging. This twolevel center will increase clinical and translational research by establishing an appropriate environment for conducting clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease and other geriatricspecific disorders; 2) The Center for College of Nursing Sciences. The 43,000squarefoot (4,000 building will enable the college to enroll more nursing students and prepare more nurse faculty; 3) the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute due to open in 2012.[2][3]A private medical college was established in Omaha in 1880.
